Mild days outdoors

December feels cool and fairly dry in Zhongshan. Afternoons reach about 21°C, while mornings and evenings can fall to 11°C. There's often enough sun for a comfortable day outside, and rain tends to be brief rather than a constant part of your plans.

It's a good time to visit the Sun Yat-sen Former Residence in Cuiheng or stroll around Sunwen West Road. You can also enjoy a meal of Shiqi roast pigeon without retreating from sticky summer heat. For hikes, the cooler weather makes trails around Wugui Mountain more appealing. Skip long outdoor plans if you dislike cool evenings; the temperature drops after sunset.

December has no major nationwide public holiday in China. Christmas isn't a public holiday either, though you may see seasonal displays in Zhongshan's shopping centres. The bigger travel rush comes around Chinese New Year, usually later in winter, so December is often calmer than that holiday period.

If you hate crowds, December is a comfortable choice: popular sights are generally easier to enjoy than during major holiday travel. It's also part of Zhongshan's best-weather season, so don't expect the same low-season feel as the hot, rainy months. Prices may be higher than in summer, though December usually avoids the sharp holiday rush.

Travelling with kids? The walk around Cuiheng's historic village and the former residence is easier in mild weather, but allow time for the outdoor paths and cooler shade.

For a city day, pair Sunwen West Road's old arcade-style buildings with a stop for Shiqi roast pigeon nearby. The area is especially pleasant when you can wander between shops and food stops without heavy rain. If you're visiting Cuiheng, check the local bus route from central Zhongshan before setting out; the historic village sits away from the city centre.
