Shaoguan Weather in January

January: cool and often grey

January feels chilly rather than bitterly cold in Shaoguan. It's a good month to visit, though October to December are even better. Afternoons reach about 16°C, but mornings and evenings can drop to 5°C. Rain falls on nine days, and cloud often softens the light, so pack a warm layer for the day and something cosy for after sunset. If sunshine matters more to you, nearby Qingyuan, Guangzhou and Dongguan all rate Excellent this month.

The weather still works well for city sights and temple visits. Try Nanhua Temple, or wander Shaoguan's riverside streets between showers. Danxia Mountain is worth the trip too, but low cloud may hide the famous red cliffs, so save a long hike for a clearer day.

Holidays and crowds

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, though the date changes each year. When it does, expect more local travel, busy transport and some businesses closing. Outside that period, January is generally quieter than the popular October-to-December season. Prices are often less pressured than during major holiday travel, but they can rise around New Year.

If you hate crowds, choose a January week away from the Lunar New Year rush. You'll have a calmer visit to Shaoguan's main sights, though grey skies are more likely than in autumn.

A useful local tip

At Danxia Mountain, ask at the entrance which paths are open after rain before you set off. The stone steps can be slick, and mist may make a viewpoint feel less rewarding. If the cliffs disappear into cloud, head back into town for a warm bowl of Shaoguan-style stuffed tofu instead. It's a local speciality that suits a damp winter afternoon.
