Ganzhou Weather in January

January: cool, damp days

January feels chilly rather than freezing in Ganzhou. Afternoons reach about 14°C, but mornings can drop to 3°C. The air is often cloudy and humid, with rain on several days, so the old streets can feel cold and slippery.

The Song-dynasty city wall and the old town's narrow lanes still make good outings between showers. Save Tongtianyan's outdoor grottoes for a brighter day, and don't count on long, sunny walks. January is winter, not beach weather; nearby Longyan and Jieyang have better conditions if sunshine is your priority.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day brings a public holiday, while Chinese New Year can fall in January or February. Its date changes each year. If it lands in January, expect more domestic travel and some family-run restaurants or shops to close around the holiday.

If you hate crowds, January outside the holiday period is a quieter choice than October to December, Ganzhou's best overall months. It's winter low season, so stays may cost less than in those popular autumn months, though holiday demand can change that.

Make the most of a cool day

Rainfall is lower than in February, but January is still damp enough to shape your plans. Keep the indoor Ganzhou Museum in mind for a wet spell, then visit the city wall when the paving is dry. The Dongjin Floating Bridge is a local landmark over the Zhang River; check its current access before making it the focus of your day.

Travelling with kids? Pair a short city-wall walk with a warm bowl of Ganzhou fish dumplings, a local speciality. A cosy meal can be a welcome finish after a grey afternoon.
