Visiting Ganzhou in April
April weather in Ganzhou
April is mild to warm, but it's usually damp and grey, so it's not a great month to visit. Highs reach 25°C and lows dip to 15°C, but rain falls on 17 days, humidity stays high, and you get only about 2.5 hours of sun a day. That's why April rates Poor at 3.8/10. You'll be switching between dry spells and showers, and it's rain that holds the month back. The weather doesn't really improve in May, when rain climbs to 247 mm.
Because of that, plan around the weather rather than against it. You can still wander the old city walls and the narrow historic streets between showers. When rain sets in, the covered walkways at Yugu Pavilion make a useful stop. Long hikes and full days outdoors are less reliable, so keep your plans loose and don't count on clear skies.
What to do and what to skip
Spring suits unhurried city visits, local food stops and short walks. When the weather turns wet, try sanbei chicken, a local dish, in a cosy restaurant. Skip any plan that depends on a fine day outside, since April's cloud and rain make outdoor plans hard to predict.
If you'd rather avoid crowds, steer clear of Qingming, the early-April tomb-sweeping holiday. Many people visit family graves, and transport and popular sights get busier around it.
If the weather here doesn't suit you, nearby Yichun (227 km), Hengyang (258 km) and Fuzhou (273 km) all have Fair weather this month.
Crowds, costs and a local tip
Outside Qingming, April is calmer than the peak travel season. If you can wait, October to December is the best time to visit Ganzhou, with the best overall weather of the year. Prices can be easier on the wallet than in those popular months, though holiday travel may push up demand.
For a practical rainy-day route, start at the Ancient Floating Bridge over the Zhang River, then head back towards the old city's covered lanes. The bridge is exposed to the weather, so go when the rain lets up and don't make it the whole afternoon.
