May feels warm, damp and often cloudy. Highs reach 28°C, with nights around 20°C, but humidity makes afternoons feel sticky. Rain falls on about 20 days, and there's little sunshine on average. The showers can interrupt outdoor plans, so a full day on the paths at Tongtianyan may be frustrating; wet stone steps can also be slippery.

You can still explore Ganzhou's old city wall and narrow streets between showers. For a quieter indoor spell, duck into the Ganzhou Museum, then return to the streets when the rain eases.

China's Labor Day holiday falls in May and brings a busy travel period. Ganzhou's historic centre and popular sights can feel crowded, and transport and hotel prices may rise around the holiday. The rest of the month is usually calmer and cheaper than that holiday stretch, though May's weather is less settled than the best months, October to December.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Labor Day holiday and visit later in May. There's no reason to expect dry weather then, but you'll have more room to explore the old city.
