May: warm and wet

May feels warm, damp and often cloudy in Hengyang. The high reaches 28°C, but frequent rain and sticky air can make a full day outdoors tiring. Showers affect 19 days, so expect your plans to change.

The rain doesn't rule out sightseeing. Shigu Academy and the riverside are good for a shorter city outing between showers. Mount Heng is worth visiting, but wet paths can be slippery and cloud may hide the views. Save a long summit hike for a clearer day.

Holidays and crowds

China's May Day holiday brings more visitors to Hengyang, especially around Nanyue and Mount Heng. Trains and popular sights can feel crowded, and fares may rise during the holiday rush. Outside that period, May is generally less busy than the popular October and November travel season.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the May Day break and visit Mount Heng on a weekday. The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in May, though its date changes each year; if it does, look out for zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves.

Make room for rain

May is wetter than April and nearly as wet as June, so don't build your visit around uninterrupted mountain views. Keep a flexible day for Nanyue, and use a rainy spell to explore Hengyang's indoor sights or linger over a bowl of local fish noodles.

For Mount Heng, check the conditions before setting out from Nanyue. If the trail is slick or the summit is clouded over, enjoy the temples and lower paths instead of pushing on. In the city, a rain break is a good time to visit Shigu Academy, set beside the Xiangjiang River.
