May feels warm, damp and often cloudy. Afternoon highs reach 28°C, but humidity makes the air feel stickier than the number suggests. Rain falls on many days, so you may get a shower between sightseeing stops.

The weather works well for a flexible city visit. Explore Hunan Provincial Museum or browse around Taiping Street between showers. Save longer walks on Yuelu Mountain for a clearer spell; wet paths can be slippery. Don't count on a dry day for a full outdoor itinerary.

What to do and when

May Day brings a major public holiday in China. Changsha's popular spots, including Orange Isle and Wuyi Square, can feel crowded then, and hotel prices may rise. Outside the holiday, May is generally quieter than the popular October and November travel months.

If you hate crowds, avoid the May Day travel rush and spend a rainy afternoon over a bowl of Changsha rice noodles instead. The city is known for its spicy food, though you can ask for less chilli.

Getting around in the rain

May is wetter than April, and June is wetter still, so showers can interrupt plans throughout the month. Keep indoor sights in your day's mix, and don't set out for a long mountain walk if heavy rain has left the trails slick.

For Orange Isle, take Metro Line 2 to Juzizhou station. It puts you close to the island's main sights without a long walk from central Changsha. Give yourself time to cross the island, and keep a backup stop in mind if rain moves in.
