November doesn't bring a major national holiday in China, so you'll miss the week-long travel rushes that come with Golden Week. Singles' Day falls on November 11. It's best known as a huge online shopping event, rather than a festival with street celebrations in Changsha.

November is one of Changsha's best months to visit, alongside October. It's generally calmer than October, when the National Day holiday brings heavy domestic travel, and you may find hotels and flights less pressured. The trade-off is shorter daylight and more chance of grey, wet weather.

Travelling with kids? Build in a break at the Hunan Provincial Museum if rain interrupts an outdoor day. For Orange Isle, use the metro to Juzizhou station and check the walking conditions before setting out. The island is exposed, and a cool, rainy spell can make its long paths feel less inviting.
