February feels cool and damp

Changsha's February days are cool, with highs around 13°C and lows near 4°C. Rain falls on about half the month, and cloudy skies are common. You may feel the damp chill more than the temperatures suggest, especially while walking beside the Xiang River.

It's a fair month for indoor stops such as the Hunan Museum, or a warm meal of spicy Hunan food. A walk around Orange Isle can still work between showers, but long outdoor plans may feel grey and chilly. March gets warmer, though rain increases.

Lunar New Year changes the pace

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, but its date shifts each year. When it does, expect busy trains and busy family travel around the holiday. Some shops and restaurants close, while others get crowded; Lantern Festival may also fall in February.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the holiday period and check opening hours for places you want to visit. Outside that peak, February is winter low season, so the city is generally quieter and stays often cost less than in popular October and November.
