December: cool and damp

Changsha's December days feel cool, and evenings can get properly chilly. Highs reach 13°C, while lows fall to 2°C. Rain comes on several days, and grey skies are common, so outdoor plans can feel less appealing than in autumn.

It's still a good month for indoor stops like the Hunan Provincial Museum, then a warm bowl of Hunan-style rice noodles. You can walk around Taiping Street between showers, but Yuelu Mountain is less inviting when paths are wet and the air feels cold. November is milder and wetter; December is drier, but not reliably sunny.

Quiet streets, modest festivities

December sits outside Changsha's best-known autumn travel season, so you'll generally find fewer visitors than in October and November. Prices are often lower too, though exact deals depend on dates. The main exception is New Year's Eve, when central areas can get busier.

Christmas isn't a public holiday in China. You may see seasonal decorations in malls around Wuyi Square, but don't expect a citywide festival. If you're hoping for a major traditional celebration, December is a quiet time to visit.

If you hate crowds, December's a good fit for exploring the city at an easy pace.

Make the most of a cold day

Save outdoor sightseeing for a dry spell, then warm up with spicy stinky tofu or a meal near Taiping Street. Changsha food can be fiery; ask for less chilli if you're not used to it.

A useful local tip: visit Orange Isle by metro when the weather's clear, and check the riverfront conditions before setting out. The open island can feel much colder than sheltered streets, especially near the water. For a grey or rainy day, swap it for the Hunan Provincial Museum instead.
