Best Time to Visit Hengyang

Autumn is the sweet spot

October is the one month rated Excellent here, and November comes next. In October the days are warm at about 26°C, nights are cool, and the rain is the lightest of the year outside winter. Sun is the strongest of the year too, though "strong" in Hengyang still means a fair number of grey hours. The air feels less sticky than in summer.

This is the time for Mount Heng (Hengshan), one of China's Five Great Mountains. The Nanyue Temple and the stairs up to the Zhurong Peak are far more pleasant when you're not soaked or sweating. November is cooler, around 20°C by day, and still good for walking. Nights get chilly.

Spring and early summer: green but wet

March to June is the rainy stretch. It rains on 18 or 19 days a month from March through June, and May and June are the wettest, with June at 235 mm. Expect drizzle, damp air and low cloud. Mountain views can vanish.

April is the gentlest of these months. It's mild at 24°C by day, and the hills are very green. Bring a rain jacket and keep your plans loose. If you're after misty, moody scenery rather than clear views, spring suits you. Around Qingming (the tomb-sweeping holiday in early April) and the early May Labour Day break, Hengshan gets busy with Chinese visitors, so expect queues for the cable car.

Summer and winter: the tougher months

July and August are the hottest, both with highs of 33°C and warm nights of 24–25°C. Rain is lower than in June, but the heat is heavy. It's a poor time for long city walks. Hengyang is known as a hot river city, so plan your days around indoor breaks and evening strolls along the Xiang River. Summer school holidays also bring families to the mountain, which is cooler than the town but crowded.

September is a good fallback. It's still hot at 31°C, but it dries out and the crowds thin. Early October brings the National Day holiday, which fills Hengshan, so go in mid or late October if you want space.

Winter is cold and damp, with January lows near 1°C. Few buildings have strong heating, so rooms can feel colder than the forecast suggests. December is the drier choice, with the fewest rainy days of the year at 9. Hengshan sometimes gets frost, which looks lovely if you're prepared. Chinese New Year in January or February brings travel crowds on trains, but the town itself goes quiet.
