Best Time to Visit Yongzhou

Autumn is the sweet spot

October is your best bet in Yongzhou. Days are warm but not heavy, nights are cool, and it rains on only about eight days. November is nearly as good and a little cooler. September works too, though afternoons still feel hot.

This is the time for walking around Yongzhou's old sights, like the Yuxi (Silver Brook) area and the Liu Zongyuan memorials. Liu was a Tang dynasty writer who was exiled here and wrote some of his best-known essays about the local streams and hills. Autumn is also the easy season for day trips to the countryside around Mount Jiuyi (Jiuyishan), the legendary burial place of Emperor Shun.

Spring: green, grey and wet

March to May is the wettest stretch. Rain falls on 17 to 19 days a month, and the sky is often grey. April and May are warm and muggy, and the sun rarely breaks through for long.

You'll still get lush hills and quiet streets. If you like moody, misty scenery and don't mind a damp afternoon, it's fine. If you want clear views, it will frustrate you. Qingming, the tomb-sweeping holiday in early April, means families travel locally, so expect busier roads and trains for a few days.

Summer: hot and sticky

June is the wettest month, just ahead of May, with 215 mm against 210 mm. Then July and August turn hot, with highs around 33°C and warm nights near 25°C. Rain is less frequent, but when the sun is out it's strong. Midday is best spent indoors or by water.

Travelling with kids? School holidays run through July and August, so domestic tourists fill the better-known scenic spots. Yongzhou isn't a big international stop, so crowds stay modest compared with famous Chinese cities. Even so, nature spots feel busier in summer.

Winter: cool, damp and quiet

December is the pick of the cold months. It's dry by local standards, with about eight rainy days. January and February are chilly and damp, with highs of 11°C and 14°C and very little sun. Homes here often lack central heating, so evenings can feel colder than the numbers suggest.

Winter is the low season. You'll find fewer visitors and easy bookings, but the mood is dull. The big exception is Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February. Many shops close and people travel home, so plan around it.
