February: cool and damp

February in Yongzhou feels chilly more than icy. Days reach about 14°C, but mornings and evenings can fall to 4°C. Rain comes on 13 days, and cloud often hangs over the hills. You'll get only a little sun, so expect damp streets and grey views.

It's still a good time for indoor stops and short walks between showers. Visit Liuzi Temple in town, or take a look at the inscriptions at the Wuxi Stele Forest if the paths are dry. Long outdoor hikes can feel uncomfortable in the wet, and river or mountain views may be obscured.

Lunar New Year crowds

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date shifts each year. The Lantern Festival may also land in the month. Around the holiday, family travel can make transport busy, while some local shops and restaurants close for a few days.

Outside that period, February is winter low season. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in October, Yongzhou's best-weather month, and the city feels calmer. If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the main holiday dates; if you want a lively local feel, the festival period can be rewarding.

Make a flexible day

Rain totals rise in March, but February is still wet enough to change your plans. Keep outdoor sights flexible, and use a rainy spell for a meal of Yongzhou blood duck, a local dish cooked with duck blood and chilli. Ask for the spice level that suits you.

For a drier outing, try the Wuxi Stele Forest when the forecast allows. Its stone carvings are the point of the visit, so mist and rain can make close viewing harder. Travelling with kids? Keep the day centred on town, with Liuzi Temple as a short stop rather than a long, exposed walk.
