Best Time to Visit Heshan

Autumn is the sweet spot

October and November are the best months for Heshan. October days reach about 25°C, and the nights are cool enough to sleep well. Rain falls on only about ten days a month, so you can plan a walk along the Zi River (Zijiang) without a backup plan.

November is cooler and calmer. It suits slow days around town, with a hot bowl of Hunan noodles with chilli when the evening turns crisp. September is also good, but it's still hot in the afternoons. If you can pick only one month, pick October.

Spring and summer: wet and sticky

From March to June it rains on 16 to 18 days a month, and June is the wettest at 231 mm. Skies are grey and the air feels heavy. May and June are rated Poor for a reason. Clothes don't dry, and outdoor plans get washed out.

Spring still has a charm. April is mild at 24°C, and it's fine for temples, markets and indoor sightseeing if you carry an umbrella. Hunan's spring rain makes the countryside very green, which is nice if you're happy to see it through drizzle.

July and August are the hottest months, and they tie at 33°C by day. Nights stay warm at 24°C or 25°C. The rain eases a little, but the heat is the problem. Stay indoors in the afternoon and go out in the evening, when locals gather for street food and a cold drink.

Winter: cold and damp

December is surprisingly good. It's the driest month at 42 mm, with only eight rainy days. But it's cold, and it dips near freezing at night. January and February are rated Fair. Homes in this part of China often have little central heating, so the damp cold can feel sharper than the numbers suggest.

Crowds and events

Heshan isn't a big tourist stop, so you won't face heavy crowds in any month. The busy times are national holidays, when many Chinese families travel. These include Golden Week in early October and Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) in late January or February. Trains and roads fill up, so book your seats early for these dates. Mid-Autumn Festival, with its moon cakes and family dinners, usually falls in September or early October. It's a good time to see local customs, and the weather is pleasant.
