Winter and autumn: the easy months

October to February is when Nanning is at its best. October is the sunniest month in the data, with warm days and far less rain than summer. November and December feel mild and dry. December is the driest month, with rain on only five days. January and February are cooler, and the nights can feel properly chilly at around 8°C. You'll want a jacket for evenings by the Yong River.

These months suit almost any trip. You can walk the riverside paths, browse the Zhongshan Road night food street, and try the local rice noodle dish, laoyou fen (a sour, spicy noodle soup). Travelling with kids? Qingxiu Mountain is a pleasant day out when the air isn't heavy.

Spring: warming up, getting wetter

March is Good but grey. It's the least sunny month in the data, and rain falls on about eleven days. April is warmer and wetter again. Expect damp, muggy days that are fine for museums and cafés but not great for views.

Spring does have a big date. The Song Festival, called Sanyuesan (the "third day of the third lunar month"), usually falls in March or April. It's a major celebration of the Zhuang people, the main ethnic group in Guangxi. Expect folk singing and local events around the region. Chinese New Year often lands in late January or February and brings travel crowds. Many shops close for a few days, so check the date before you book.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

From May to September, Nanning is warm and soaked. June is the wettest month, with 255 mm and rain on 24 days. July and August aren't far behind. Humidity sits around 86%, and the nights stay warm at 24–25°C. Afternoons feel sticky, and showers can be heavy.

It's low season for foreign visitors, so you'll find quieter sights and easy hotel deals. If you come anyway, plan indoor time at the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities and keep a rain jacket handy. Skip hiking and day trips to the countryside if you can. Rivers rise, and paths turn muddy.

Early autumn is worth a note. September is still rated Poor, and rain falls on 16 days. By October, the skies clear.

Nanning also hosts the China-ASEAN Expo, usually in autumn. Hotels can fill up and prices rise, so it's worth checking dates. Chinese school and national holidays, like the first week of October, bring domestic crowds too.
