When to go to Liuzhou: a seasonal guide

October to December: the best stretch

Autumn is when Liuzhou is at its easiest. October is the driest and sunniest month of the year, with highs around 27°C and only seven rainy days. November cools to a comfortable 22°C by day. December stays dry too, though nights drop to about 6°C.

This is the time for walking along the Liu River, which loops around the city centre. Evenings are good for the night food stalls, where you'll find luosifen, the town's famous river-snail rice noodles. The smell is strong, but the taste is worth it. Try them at least once. Liuzhou is also a good base for day trips to Guilin and Yangshuo, where the hills are clear and hiking is pleasant.

January and February: cool and grey

Winter is mild, not cold. Days reach 15°C to 18°C, but the sun barely shows, at under three hours a day. Skies are often grey and the air feels damp. Nights are chilly, and few buildings have strong heating, so a warm room matters more than you'd think.

Rain is light, so it's still a fine time for city sightseeing and food. Chinese New Year usually falls in late January or February, and many families travel then. Trains and hotels fill up, and some small restaurants close for a few days. Travelling around then? Expect crowds at stations rather than at the sights.

March to June: wet and getting hotter

Spring here means rain. March brings 17 wet days, and by June you get 392 mm over 24 days, the wettest month of the year. Humidity sits near 87%, and afternoons feel sticky. Clothes dry slowly, so don't count on quick laundry.

If you come anyway, plan for indoor stops and short walks between showers. Mountain views around the region are often hidden in cloud. In early spring, the Zhuang people's "March 3" song festival (Sanyuesan) is a highlight across Guangxi. It's a good reason to visit despite the weather. Check local dates, since it follows the lunar calendar.

July to September: hot, then easing

July and August are the hottest months, both with highs of 31°C. Nights stay warm at 24°C to 25°C. Rain is lower than in June but still falls on 18 days each month, often as heavy afternoon bursts. September is a good in-between choice. It's still warm, but only 13 days are wet and the sun returns.

Summer school holidays bring Chinese families to the region, especially to Guilin and Yangshuo. Liuzhou itself stays fairly quiet. If you hate heat, skip July and August. If you want fewer people and don't mind sweating, late September is a fair gamble.
