Cool, grey winters: December to February

December is the driest month, and it's also the one our comfort score likes best, along with February. Days are mild, around 20°C in December, but the nights get properly chilly. Guigang's houses rarely have central heating, so indoor evenings can feel colder than you'd expect.

Skies are often grey and the sun doesn't stay out long. That's fine for wandering Guigang's Dongjin Lake park (Dongjinhu) or eating at local noodle stalls. It's less good if you want blue-sky photos. Chinese New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for a few days, and the city empties as families go home.

Spring turns damp: March and April

March is the start of the wet slide. Rain falls on more than half the days, and drizzle hangs around. April is warmer but even wetter. If you're only passing through, you'll manage. If you want to be outdoors, pick another season.

Hot and soaking: May to September

Rainy season runs May to August, and June is the wettest, with rain on 24 days. Expect heavy downpours, sticky air and warm nights. July and August are the hottest, tied at 32°C, though May to September all feel close to that. Travelling with kids? This is the toughest stretch. School holidays fall in July and August, so domestic trips pick up then, but Guigang is not a big tourist stop and you won't face major crowds.

September is still humid, but the rain eases and the sun starts to return.

Best window: October and November

This is when Guigang feels easiest. October has the most sun of the year, with only eight rainy days. Evenings are warm enough for a night walk along the Yu River (Yujiang), and the heat has broken. November is cooler still and just as dry.

Early October brings China's National Day holiday, the Golden Week. Trains and roads fill up across the country, so expect busier stations even if Guigang itself stays calm. If you can, travel in the second half of the month or in November.

If you want one simple answer, go in late October or November. For quieter, cooler days with little rain, December works well too.
