Winter and November: the easy months

From November to February, Xinyi is at its best. Days are mild, nights are cool, and the rain is light. December is the driest month, with only 5 rainy days. January and February are cool enough that you'll want a jacket in the evening, since lows fall to 8°C and 11°C. Skies are often grey, though, so don't count on lots of sunshine.

This is the time for walking around the old streets of the town centre and for day trips into the hills of western Guangdong. Eating is easier too. You can have a hot bowl of rice noodles or a slow meal of local chicken without sweating through it. If you're travelling with kids or older parents, this is the safest window.

Chinese New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many families travel home, so trains and buses fill up, and some small restaurants and shops close for several days. Xinyi gets busy with returning locals rather than tourists. Expect a festive feel, but also some closed doors.

March to April: damp and building

March is Fair, but it already feels different. It rains on 12 days, humidity is 78%, and sunshine is low. By April, rain falls on 15 days and the rating drops to Poor. It's warm and muggy, and clothes dry slowly.

Late March to early April is Qingming, the tomb-sweeping holiday. Families visit graves in the hills, and roads can be slow for a few days. If you only have these months, plan indoor stops like markets and tea houses and treat dry hours as a bonus.

May to September: hot and wet

This is the rainy season, and it's honest to say it's hard going. June is the wettest month, with 308 mm over 24 days. July and August are the hottest at 31°C, and nights stay warm at 24°C. Humidity sits close to 90%, so the air feels thick even when it isn't pouring.

Showers can be heavy, and they can disrupt hiking and road trips. If you come anyway, expect short travel days and flexible plans. The upside is fewer visitors and green countryside. September is a little better, with more sun at 4.3 hours a day.

October: the sweet spot

October is the turning point. Rain drops to 8 days and sunshine climbs to 6.1 hours a day, the best of the year. It's still warm at 28°C, but the air feels fresher. If you want hill walks and clearer views, aim for October or November.
