When to go to Yangjiang: a seasonal guide

November to February: the sweet spot

This is the dry, cool stretch, and it's when Yangjiang is at its best. December is the driest month, with only 4 rainy days. Days are mild, around 22°C in December and January, and evenings get properly cool. You'll want a light jacket by the sea, especially after dark.

It suits almost any trip. Beach days at Hailing Island (Hailing Dao), the area's best-known seaside spot, feel comfortable rather than sticky. Sea swimming can be chilly in midwinter, so think walks, seafood and sand rather than long dips. Skies are often hazy rather than bright blue, since sun hours stay modest all year.

Chinese New Year usually falls in late January or February. Many Chinese families travel home then, so expect fuller trains, busier roads and higher demand at coastal spots. Book transport early for those weeks. Other winter weeks are calmer.

March to April: warm and getting damp

March is still pleasant, but humidity creeps up and rain days nearly double. April is where it turns. Rain falls on about half the month's days, and the air feels heavy. Mornings can be foggy near the coast.

If you want a quieter trip and don't mind a few showers, March works well. April is harder. Our rating drops to Poor, so keep plans flexible and have indoor options, like a long seafood lunch in Jiangcheng, the main city district. Yangjiang is known for its steamed and braised dishes, plus the local preserved black beans (douchi).

May to September: hot, wet and stormy

This is the rainy season, and it's honest to say it's tough. June is the wettest month, with rain on 25 days. July and August stay hot and sticky, with lows of 25–26°C, so nights bring little relief. Heavy downpours can shut down beach plans for days.

This is also typhoon season on the South China coast. Storms can cancel boats and close beaches, so watch forecasts closely. Hotels are often cheaper and the shoreline is emptier. But if you want a classic beach holiday, this isn't the time.

If you must come in summer, July has the most sun of the wet months, at 4.1 hours a day. Mid-July to August is Chinese school holiday time, so family crowds do gather at Hailing Island despite the weather.

October: the reset

October is the bridge back to good weather. Rain falls on 8 days and sunshine peaks at 5.8 hours a day, the best of the year. It's still warm enough for the beach. Early October can be busy during the National Day holiday in the first week, so aim for mid to late October if you want calmer sands.
