January is mild by day, with highs around 20°C, but nights can feel chilly when lows reach 8°C. Rain tends to come in occasional spells rather than lasting all month, and cloudy skies are common. You'll still get some sunshine, so it's a comfortable month for wandering around Xinyi and visiting local sights.

The weather is good for a day out at Tianma Mountain, though wet paths can make a hike less pleasant. Save outdoor plans for clearer spells, and don't count on a sunny beach day. December is slightly warmer and drier, while February is warmer with similar rainfall.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day brings a public holiday, but the bigger change comes if Lunar New Year falls in January. Its date shifts from year to year. Around the festival, people travel to see family, and transport and popular local spots can get busier. Outside that period, January is usually a calmer time to visit than major holiday weeks.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling around Spring Festival and enjoy Xinyi on ordinary weekdays. Prices can rise around the holiday, while the rest of January is generally a better-value part of the busy December-to-February travel season.

For a practical local stop, head to Xinyi Railway Station before travelling onward. Check your train details there, especially around Lunar New Year, when holiday journeys can make transport busier. In town, take a break from a cloudy afternoon with a bowl of Xinyi's local chicken dish; ask locally for the version served nearby, since menus vary.

Travelling with kids? Keep Tianma Mountain flexible: choose a dry day for the walk, then leave a relaxed town visit as your backup. January's mild afternoons make that an easier swap than in hotter months.
