Best Time to Visit Zhanjiang

November to March: the easy months

From November to March, Zhanjiang is mild and fairly dry. December is the driest month at 33 mm. Days are warm without being sticky, and evenings are cool enough for a light jacket. It's still humid, and the sky is often hazy or grey, so don't expect big blue days. January and February are the coolest, with highs around 19 to 21°C.

These months suit city walking and food trips. Wander the old French-influenced streets around Chikan, a historic district by the harbour, and eat the local seafood. Try white-cut chicken and fresh oysters. Zhanjiang is known for both. Hiking is less of a draw here, since the area is flat, but the coastal roads are pleasant to cycle.

April and October: the in-between months

April warms up fast and gets damp, with rain on about half the days. October is still wet at 200 mm, but the sun comes back, with the most sunshine of any month at 5.8 hours a day. If you can't travel in winter, October is the better gamble. Late October into November is a sweet spot, when the heat eases and the rain drops off.

May to September: hot, wet and stormy

Be honest with yourself about this stretch. It's hot, heavy and humid, with rain on most days. August is the wettest month at 350 mm, falling on 27 days. Highs sit near 30°C, and nights barely cool down. Zhanjiang is on the coast, so this is also typhoon season. Storms can close ferries and beaches for a day or two, so keep your plans flexible.

The upside is that it's low season. If you don't mind showers, you'll get quiet beaches on Naozhou Island and cheaper rooms. Rain often comes in short, hard bursts, so you can duck into a tea house and wait it out.

Crowds and festivals

Winter is the busiest time, mostly with domestic visitors from elsewhere in Guangdong and beyond. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, is the peak. Many locals travel home, and some small restaurants close for a few days. Expect fuller hotels and traffic around the Lunar New Year holiday. Outside that week, crowds stay modest.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or early October, brings family gatherings and mooncakes. It falls in the wet season, so a rainy night is possible.
