Mild, damp days

March in Zhanjiang feels warm rather than hot, with daytime highs around 23°C and nights near 20°C. But the air is humid, skies are often cloudy, and rain falls on about ten days. You may get a sticky afternoon or a sudden shower, so long outdoor plans can feel less pleasant.

It's a comfortable month for exploring the old streets of Chikan or walking around Huguangyan, a volcanic lake just outside the city. The lake path can be slippery after rain. Beach time at Jinsha Bay is possible, but March isn't the sunniest month for a long swim or a classic beach day.

Quiet between holidays

March doesn't have a major fixed holiday that draws visitors to Zhanjiang. The Lantern Festival follows the lunar calendar, so it can fall in March some years, but it often lands in February. Check the local calendar if you're hoping to catch celebrations.

Compared with the busier winter holiday period, March is generally calmer. It's also before the wetter, warmer stretch that follows, so you can enjoy sightseeing without April's heavier rain. Families who prefer quieter walks may like Huguangyan, though damp paths can be tricky with small children.

Bring a small umbrella for walks around Chikan's old arcades; showers can interrupt a stroll, and the covered walkways offer some shelter. Afterward, look for Zhanjiang seafood, especially oysters, a local favourite. March's weather is mild enough for a relaxed city break, but don't count on clear skies or hours of sunshine at the coast.
