When to go to Haikou: a seasonal guide
Dec to Feb: the sweet spot
Winter is when Haikou feels easiest. Days are warm but not heavy, and nights are mild enough for a walk along the Haikou Bay seafront. January and February are the driest of the lot, with rain on only six or seven days a month. The sky is often grey and soft rather than bright, so don't expect endless sun.
This is also high season. Northern Chinese visitors flee the cold and head south to Hainan, so hotels fill up and prices rise. Chinese New Year, in late January or February, is the busiest stretch. If you hate crowds, aim for early December. Spend your days in the Qilou Old Street area, with its colonial-style arcades, and eat at a local café over a bowl of Hainan chicken rice or a plate of Wenchang chicken.
March to April: warming up
March is still pleasant, with highs around 26°C, though it turns damper and a bit muggy. By April the rain picks up, with showers on about half the days. Mornings are often fine, so plan outdoor sights like the Hainan Volcano Park (Shishan) early and keep afternoons for the museum or a long lunch. Crowds thin out after the New Year rush, which is good for you. March is a smart pick if you want lower prices without the full wet-season soak.
May to October: hot, wet and quiet
Be honest with yourself here: this is the hard part of the year. It rains on most days from May to September, and nights stay around 26–27°C. The air feels thick and sticky. October is the wettest month, with 339 mm, though it has fewer rainy days than summer, so the rain comes in heavier bursts.
Haikou also sits in typhoon territory, and storms can close ferries, flights and beaches, mostly from late summer into autumn. Check forecasts before you travel and keep your plans flexible. On the plus side, hotels are cheaper and the city is quieter. Summer school holidays bring some families, but nothing like winter.
November: the quiet return
November is a good compromise. Rain eases to about 11 days, highs sit near 26°C, and the winter crowds haven't arrived yet. It suits food-focused city breaks and day trips to the coast without the sweat of summer.
