Haikou feels mild in February, with daytime highs around 23°C and evenings near 18°C. It's warmer than January, but cooler than March, so walking around the city feels comfortable. Humidity is high, and cloudy skies are common; sunshine averages only a few hours a day.

Rain falls on about six days, usually leaving plenty of time for Qilou Old Street, the Hainan Museum or a stroll along the coast. February works well for sightseeing and easy outdoor walks. Don't plan on reliably sunny beach days, though, and wet spells can make longer hikes less appealing.

Holidays and crowds

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, sometimes falls in February. When it does, Haikou can get busy as families travel to Hainan, and transport and hotel prices may rise. The Lantern Festival may also land in February, depending on the lunar calendar.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Spring Festival holiday itself. Outside that holiday, February is still part of Haikou's popular December-to-February season, so it's generally busier than the hotter, wetter months ahead. It's not equally crowded every year; the holiday dates make a big difference.

Tips for Haikou in February

Travelling with kids? Qilou Old Street is an easy outing, with covered walkways that offer some shelter if a shower rolls through. Take your time looking at the arcaded buildings, then try Hainanese chicken rice at a local restaurant.

For a quieter visit, go on a weekday rather than during the holiday rush. If you're heading to the Hainan Museum, check its opening days before setting out; it's a useful indoor stop when clouds or rain interrupt your plans.
