Visiting Haikou in April
April feels warm and damp
Haikou in April is warm even after dark, with daytime highs around 29°C and lows near 23°C. Humidity is high, and rain falls on about half the days. You'll often get a mix of cloud, sunshine and passing showers rather than a full day of rain.
That's comfortable enough for a wander around Qilou Old Street or a visit to the Hainan Museum. But sticky afternoons can make long walks tiring, and wet paths can spoil a planned beach day. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, and save the most exposed activities for a brighter spell.
Qingming and quieter days
The Qingming Festival falls in early April. Families visit ancestral graves, and the public holiday can bring a short-lived rise in domestic travel. Outside that period, April is generally calmer than Haikou's busy winter season, when visitors come for the milder weather.
Prices aren't fixed from month to month, but April is usually a shoulder-season choice rather than a winter peak. It's also before May's much heavier rain, so you can still enjoy outdoor plans without the same wet-weather risk.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Qingming holiday and visit Qilou Old Street on an ordinary weekday.
Make the most of the showers
April gets more rain than March, but much less than May. You can still fit in a stroll along the arcades of Qilou Old Street; their covered walkways give you somewhere to duck in when a shower passes. They're also a good place to pause for Hainanese snacks.
For a change of pace, try Wenchang chicken, a well-known Hainan dish, at a local restaurant rather than waiting for a clear beach afternoon. Haikou's best overall months are December to February, but April works if you're happy to shape your day around the weather.
