If you hate crowds, August may test your patience: it's part of China's summer school holiday, so family attractions can be busy. Prices and visitor numbers are generally higher than in quieter months like November and December. July is just as wet, while September brings less rain.

Qixi, often called Chinese Valentine's Day, can fall in August. Its date follows the lunar calendar, so it doesn't land in the same month every year. Don't plan your trip around it without checking the date.

Try laoyoufen, a sour, spicy rice-noodle soup that's closely linked with Nanning. It's a warming choice when a wet evening feels less inviting than a long walk.
