September's sticky weather

Nanning stays hot in September, with daytime highs around 31°C and warm nights. Humidity is high, and rain falls on 16 days on average. Showers can interrupt a walk, while cloudy skies make the heat feel close and heavy.

You can still explore Guangxi Museum of Nationalities or take a short visit to Qingxiu Mountain between showers. Save long outdoor walks for clearer spells. A full day on the trails may feel tiring in the damp heat, and wet paths can be slippery. August is wetter, so September brings some relief, but it's not a dry month.

Events and crowds

The China-ASEAN Expo is held in Nanning, often around September, though dates vary. If it overlaps your visit, expect more business travellers and fuller hotels near the expo venue. The Mid-Autumn Festival can also fall in September; its date changes each year, and family gatherings may make transport busier.

If you hate crowds, avoid the expo period and the days around Mid-Autumn Festival. Outside those dates, September is generally quieter than China's October National Day holiday, and demand is usually lower than in the best-weather months of February and November to December.

Make rainy spells work

A wet afternoon suits a slow meal of laoyou fen, Nanning's sour, spicy rice noodles, at a local noodle shop. Zhongshan Road's food stalls are another good evening option, though heavy rain can make wandering less pleasant.

For Qingxiu Mountain, take the metro to Qingxiushan station and keep your visit flexible. If rain starts, head back rather than pushing on along damp paths. September is still warm after dark, so an evening meal out can be easier than sightseeing through the stickiest part of the day.
