Ljubljana Weather in December

Cold, grey days

December feels damp and chilly in Ljubljana, with highs around 5°C and lows near -1°C. Rain falls on about 10 days, and the sky is often cloudy. Short daylight and little sun can make the riverfront feel cold, especially after dark.

You can still enjoy the compact centre on foot, ducking into the National Gallery or Ljubljana Castle between strolls. The castle funicular saves you a steep climb if paths are wet. Save longer hikes in the nearby hills for clearer weather; muddy trails and grey views can take the fun out of them.

Festive Ljubljana

December brings festive lights, market stalls and concerts along the Ljubljanica river. Wander between Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge, then follow the stalls towards the Central Market. The city's New Year celebrations add music and crowds to the centre.

Travelling with kids? The lights and market make an easy evening outing, but the riverfront can feel cold and crowded. For a quieter visit, go on a weekday before the holiday rush.

Crowds and local tips

Most of December is quieter than Ljubljana's popular spring and summer months, and prices are often lower. The festive period is the exception: visitors fill the centre around Christmas and New Year, and places to stay can cost more.

For a warm-up, stop at a café beneath the arcades beside the Central Market, then walk the river route from the Triple Bridge to Dragon Bridge. It's an easy way to see the lights without committing to a long outdoor outing. Don't expect December to be a good month for sunny sightseeing; April and June to September are better bets.
