October feels cool and changeable in Ljubljana. Days can reach 17°C, but evenings drop to 7°C. Rain falls on about 11 days, and cloudy skies are common, so river walks may turn damp. Still, the weather is good for exploring the Old Town, visiting Ljubljana Castle, or lingering over coffee along the Ljubljanica.

The hills around the city are less appealing after rain, when paths can get muddy. Keep a museum or café stop in mind for wet spells. The Central Market's covered colonnade is handy when showers catch you by the river.

Events and autumn colour

October brings the Ljubljana Marathon, a major city event with road closures that can affect getting around. Its date varies, so check before choosing a weekend. The City of Women festival also takes place in October, with performances and other arts events across the city.

Slovenia's Reformation Day falls on October 31. Some businesses may close, so don't count on every shop being open. If you hate crowds, avoid the marathon weekend; otherwise, October is usually calmer than the summer high season.

Crowds and costs

With summer's busiest months behind it, October is generally a quieter, often less expensive time to visit. You'll find more breathing room around Prešeren Square and the riverside cafés than in peak summer, though the marathon can make one weekend busier.
