October feels cool and changeable. Afternoons reach about 17°C, but evenings can drop to 7°C. Rain falls on around eight days, and cloud often softens the light. You'll still get pleasant spells for walking the Upper Town, browsing Dolac Market or taking the funicular between the centre and Gornji Grad.

Rain can make long outdoor plans less appealing, so keep the Museum of Broken Relationships or the city's cafés in mind for a damp afternoon. The Maksimir Park paths are lovely in autumn, but muddy after rain. Compared with September, October is cooler and less wet.

Events and city feel

October is a good month for a city break without peak summer crowds. You'll usually find the centre calmer than in July and August, though weekends around Ban Jelačić Square can still feel busy. Prices are often lower than during the summer high season, but they vary by hotel and event.

There isn't one major October festival that defines the month. Instead, look out for seasonal chestnuts from street stalls as the weather cools. If you're visiting near the end of the month, note that All Saints' Day is on November 1; locals visit Mirogoj Cemetery, so the area can be especially busy around the holiday.

For a rainy spell, take the short funicular up to Gornji Grad, then walk through the covered Stone Gate. It's a handy route when wet streets make the climb from the main square slippery. Stop nearby for štrukli, a baked pastry filled with fresh cheese, at a traditional restaurant. October's cool evenings make this warming Zagreb dish especially welcome.
