August heat in the city

August days are warm, with highs around 29°C, and evenings cool to about 17°C. Rain falls on several days, often making sightseeing feel more comfortable afterwards. Plan your walk around Gornji Grad, Zagreb's Upper Town, for cooler morning streets, then save indoor stops for sticky afternoons.

You'll get plenty of sunshine for a stroll through Maksimir Park or a café break on Tkalčićeva Street. Heavy showers can interrupt outdoor plans, so don't count on a full day outside. The Sava riverbanks can feel exposed in the heat.

Holidays and summer pace

August 5 is Croatia's Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, a national holiday. Some shops and services may close or change hours. August 15 is also a public holiday, the Assumption of Mary.

If you hate crowds, Zagreb can feel calmer than in spring or early autumn, as many locals head to the coast. It's not the peak beach-season crush you'll find in coastal Croatia, and you may find accommodation less pressured than in busier months. Still, popular sights and cafés stay lively, especially around the weekend.

Make the most of August

Check Dolac Market in the morning, before the sun gets strong and stalls wind down. It's just above Ban Jelačić Square, and you can try štrukli, a baked cheese pastry, nearby.

Travelling with kids? Pair Maksimir Park with a shady stop at Zagreb Zoo, which sits inside the park. In the evening, head back to Tkalčićeva for dinner when the air cools. Keep a flexible plan for rainy spells; August brings rain on about ten days.
