Visiting Zagreb in January
January feels cold and grey
January in Zagreb is properly wintry: afternoons reach about 4°C, nights can drop below freezing, and the air often feels damp. Rain falls on several days, while cloud and short daylight can make the city feel gloomy. December is wetter, but January is still a poor month for long outdoor days.
You can still enjoy the Upper Town, but keep outdoor sightseeing short and duck into the Museum of Broken Relationships or a café on Tkalčićeva Street. Save long strolls through Maksimir Park for brighter weather. If you're hoping for a sunny city break, January may disappoint.
Quiet after the holidays
New Year's Day and Epiphany, on 6 January, are public holidays in Croatia. Zagreb's Advent season often runs into early January, so you may catch its final festive events, though the programme changes each year. After the holiday period, the city is quieter than in spring and summer. Hotels and flights are often less costly than during busier months, but check holiday opening hours for museums and shops.
If you hate crowds, January is a good time to see central sights without the peak-season bustle.
Make the most of a chilly day
Use Zagreb's trams to break up time outdoors. From Ban Jelačić Square, you can ride towards the main railway station and visit the Art Pavilion, then warm up with local štrukli, a baked cheese pastry. For the Upper Town, take the funicular if it's running; service can be disrupted, so check locally before setting out.
The Dolac Market is worth a look, but its open-air stalls are less appealing in cold, wet weather. Go when conditions are dry, then spend the greyest part of the day in a museum or over lunch.
