Advent in Zagreb

December's big draw is Advent Zagreb, with Christmas lights, market stalls and seasonal food around central squares and parks. Ban Jelačić Square and Zrinjevac are popular spots for a wander, a warm drink and a look at the decorations. Christmas Day is a public holiday, so some shops and sights may close.

Travelling with kids? The lights and festive stalls make an easy evening outing, but central areas can feel busy at peak times. For a quieter stroll, head to the Upper Town away from the main market spots.

Crowds and costs

December isn't a simple low-season month in Zagreb. The city is quieter than in the warmer months overall, but Advent draws visitors, especially around weekends and the Christmas period. Hotels near the centre may cost more than in a quieter winter month, while quieter neighbourhoods can offer a calmer stay.

A useful local tip: take a ZET tram to Ban Jelačić Square, then walk between the Advent spots rather than trying to drive through the centre. The tram network makes it easy to warm up between outdoor stops, and you won't need to cross the whole city on foot.
