Visiting Zagreb in July
July weather
July feels properly summery in Zagreb: afternoons can be hot, while evenings are often more comfortable. The long days leave plenty of time for a walk through the Upper Town or a café stop around Tkalčićeva Street. Rain still shows up on about 12 days, so a shower can interrupt outdoor plans.
The city's stone streets can feel tiring in the afternoon heat. Save the steep walk up to Strossmayer Promenade for later, and use museums or the cool Grič Tunnel as a break if a shower rolls in. Maksimir Park is a calmer choice when you want green space.
Events and summer days
July often brings Dvorišta, a festival that opens Upper Town courtyards for music, food and drinks. Dates vary, but it's a lovely way to see spaces you'd normally pass by behind closed doors. Zagreb Classic also stages open-air classical concerts at King Tomislav Square in some summers; check whether it falls during your visit.
If you hate crowds, Zagreb is usually easier to explore than Croatia's coastal resorts in July. Still, summer brings more visitors than the quieter months, and accommodation can cost more than in spring or autumn.
Making the most of it
For a cooler evening, wander through the courtyards and narrow lanes around St Mark's Church, then head down to Tkalčićeva for dinner. Try štrukli, a local baked or boiled pastry filled with cheese; it's especially welcome after a day of sightseeing.
Travelling with kids? Take a break from the midday heat in the Grič Tunnel, then let them run around the paths and lawns in Maksimir Park. The tunnel is a practical shortcut between the Lower and Upper Town, and a useful shelter when summer rain arrives.
