Ljubljana: the one city we cover

Our data covers Ljubljana, so that's where the numbers come from. It's a small, walkable capital, and most people use it as a base for day trips to Lake Bled, the Postojna caves and the coast at Piran. The mountains and the coast behave differently from the capital, so check those separately if you're heading there.

Summer and spring: the best stretch

June to September is the sweet spot, and April works too. July is the hottest month at 27°C. That's warm enough for a swim at Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj, and you'll want a shady seat by the Ljubljanica river in the afternoons. Evenings are easy and long. Riverside cafés fill up, and the Ljubljana Festival runs concerts through the summer.

September is the wettest month at 133 mm, so don't expect it to be dry. Rain often comes in heavy bursts, which can spoil a hike in the Julian Alps but leaves plenty of dry hours in town. June is a good compromise if you want warmth without the peak crowds.

April is calmer and cooler. Parks turn green and the old town feels local, but pack for the odd shower.

Crowds, holidays and low season

July and August are high season. Lake Bled gets busy, especially on weekends and around 15 August, the Assumption holiday, when many Slovenes take a break. Travelling with kids? Schools finish around the end of June, so family trips peak in July and August. If you hate crowds, aim for June or early September.

Other national days can shut shops. These include 1 November (All Saints' Day) and 25 December. Many places also close on Sundays.

Winter is low season in the capital. It's cold and quiet, but December brings the Christmas market along the river, which is worth the chill. Ski resorts like Kranjska Gora have their own busy season, so expect higher demand there when the capital is quiet.
