Visiting Ljubljana in February
February feels cold and damp
Ljubljana's winter weather can make a day outside feel chilly, grey and sometimes wet. February averages a high of 6°C and a low of -2°C, with rain on about 10 days. The sun is limited, so don't count on long, bright afternoons.
You can still enjoy the old town, the riverside cafés and the National Gallery between showers. Ljubljana Castle is worth visiting, but the uphill paths can be slippery after rain. Save longer walks in Tivoli Park for a dry spell. Warm up with jota, a hearty bean-and-sauerkraut stew served in some local restaurants.
Culture and carnival
Slovenian Culture Day, or Prešeren Day, falls on February 8. It honours poet France Prešeren, whose statue stands in Prešeren Square. Museums and cultural venues often mark the holiday with special events, and some offer free entry.
The Ljubljana Dragon Carnival may also take place in February, depending on the date of Shrove Tuesday. Its parade brings costumes and dragon figures through the centre. Check the carnival dates before you go, since they change each year.
Fewer visitors, quieter streets
February is winter low season, so the centre is generally calmer than during the warmer months. You'll find fewer visitors around the Triple Bridge and Central Market than in summer. Prices for stays can also be lower, though they vary by property and event dates.
If you hate crowds, February may suit you; just expect a quieter city and changeable weather. For a practical castle visit, take the funicular from Krek Square instead of walking uphill in the rain. It leaves you close to the castle entrance, with less chance of arriving muddy.
