February feels cool, damp and often cloudy. Days reach about 11°C, while nights stay near 8°C. Rain falls on 11 days, and you'll get around three hours of sun a day. It's a fair month for weather, not a beach break.

You can still enjoy the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun on a dry afternoon, or explore the Roman Forum and St Donatus' Church without summer heat. The sea and wet pavements make long beach days less appealing, and rain can spoil a walk along the waterfront. Save nearby hikes for a clearer day.

Events and quieter streets

Zadar Carnival brings costume events and, in some years, a parade during the February carnival season. Dates and plans can change, so check the local programme before you go. It's a good chance to see the old town feeling livelier than usual without summer crowds.

If you hate crowds, February is a calm time to visit. It's winter, well outside the busiest stretch from May to August. You'll generally find fewer visitors and lower accommodation prices than in summer, though choice can be more limited and some seasonal businesses may be closed.

Make the most of a wet day

Travelling with kids? The Sea Organ is an easy stop, but keep the visit short if the wind and rain roll in. For a cosy indoor break, look for a konoba, a traditional tavern, and try pašticada, a slow-cooked meat dish found around Dalmatia.

A useful local trick: check the forecast before walking out to the Sea Organ, at the western end of the old town. On a wet, windy day, explore the lanes around Narodni trg instead, then return to the waterfront when conditions ease.
