Visiting Venice in February
February weather in Venice
February feels cold and damp, with highs around 9°C and lows near 4°C. Rain falls on about eight days, and cloudy skies are common. You'll want to keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, especially around St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge.
It's a good month for quieter visits to the Doge's Palace or the Gallerie dell'Accademia, where you can spend time indoors when the weather turns. Save long walks along the Zattere for clearer spells, and don't count on a sunny day at the beach.
Carnival and winter crowds
The Venice Carnival often takes place in February, though its dates change each year. When it's on, expect masked visitors around St Mark's Square and events across the city. Check the dates for your year, since Carnival can also fall partly in January or March.
If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest Carnival days around San Marco. Outside the festival, February is usually quieter and less costly than Venice's popular summer and early autumn months. Carnival brings a sharp jump in demand, so the city can feel packed and prices can rise.
Make the most of your visit
Travelling with kids? The Carnival masks and costumes can make a stroll through the narrow streets fun, but the busiest squares may be tiring.
For a practical warm-up, take vaporetto line 1 along the Grand Canal. You'll see palaces from the water without spending the whole day outside. Get off near Ca' Rezzonico for its museum, or continue towards San Marco if the weather improves. Try cicchetti, Venice's small bar snacks, in Cannaregio; they make an easy stop between sights. Don't plan every visit around open-air views: short daylight and changeable skies can cut a walk short.
