Venice Weather in October

Mild days, damp evenings

October feels cool and changeable in Venice. Highs reach 19°C and lows dip to 14°C, with rain on about ten days. You'll get comfortable weather for walking between St Mark's Basilica, Rialto and the quieter lanes of Cannaregio. Cloudy spells and early dusk can make long days outdoors feel shorter.

Rain doesn't usually rule out a visit, but wet stone can make the bridges slippery. Save a gondola ride for a calmer spell, and skip a long beach day on the Lido. Acqua alta, or high water, can happen in autumn, so check local notices if water is forecast.

October brings the marathon

The Venice Marathon takes place in October. Runners cross a temporary pontoon bridge over the Grand Canal before finishing near Riva dei Sette Martiri. It's fun to watch, but race-day routes and crowds can affect your plans around the waterfront.

If you hate crowds, avoid the marathon route while the race is on and explore Cannaregio instead. October isn't as packed as summer, though Venice stays popular through autumn. You may find better hotel rates than in peak summer, but don't expect the city to feel empty.

Make the most of a wet day

October gets more rain than September, though less than November. Keep indoor stops in mind: the Doge's Palace and the Gallerie dell'Accademia both make worthwhile breaks from a wet walk. At lunchtime, try cicchetti, Venice's small bar snacks, around Rialto.

If acqua alta is expected, check the tide updates before heading to St Mark's Square. The lowest parts of the city can flood first, and raised walkways may be set out. You'll save a detour by checking before crossing town.
