Visiting Venice in September
September weather
September feels warm rather than scorching, with highs around 25°C and evenings near 18°C. You'll get a mix of sun and cloud, and rain can interrupt a day out. The weather still suits long walks through San Marco and Dorsoduro, or a vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal.
The sea is pleasant for a Lido beach visit, while cooler evenings make outdoor dining comfortable. Avoid packing every hour with outdoor plans: rain falls on several days, so keep a museum or church visit in mind. St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace work well when showers arrive.
Events and crowds
The Venice Film Festival takes place on the Lido in late summer and can run into September. It brings film fans and industry guests to the island, so expect extra demand around festival venues. The Regata Storica, a historic boat parade and race, usually takes place on the Grand Canal on the first Sunday of September.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Grand Canal during the Regata Storica and choose quieter canals in Cannaregio instead. September is less hectic than the peak summer months, but Venice remains popular. Prices often ease after August, though festival dates can keep Lido stays costly.
Make the most of your visit
September is a good time to explore on foot, but narrow lanes around Rialto and San Marco can still feel packed during the day. Take a vaporetto to the Lido for a beach break, or cross to Giudecca for a calmer waterfront walk.
For the Regata Storica, don't expect to simply stroll along the Grand Canal route. Crowds gather early for a view. Instead, watch from a vaporetto stop away from the busiest stretch, or enjoy the parade from a side canal.
