Visiting Venice in November
November weather
Venice feels cool, damp and often grey in November. Rain comes on several days, and the short daylight leaves less time for wandering. It's cooler than October, so long walks can feel chilly, especially beside the canals.
You can still enjoy the Doge's Palace, Peggy Guggenheim Collection and cosy bacari, the small bars serving cicchetti, or Venetian snacks. Rain and high water can make narrow streets awkward, though. Don't count on a dry beach day at the Lido, and keep outdoor plans flexible.
If you hate crowds, November is a calmer choice than summer, but San Marco can still fill up on weekends.
Events and crowds
All Saints' Day on November 1 is a public holiday in Italy. On November 21, Venice celebrates the Festa della Madonna della Salute. Locals cross a temporary bridge over the Grand Canal to reach the Basilica della Salute and give thanks for the end of a historic plague.
Compared with peak summer, visitor numbers are usually lower, and accommodation can cost less. It's not empty: weekends and the Madonna della Salute celebrations draw people into the centre. The weather is a trade-off for quieter streets and better chances of finding a table.
Local tips for Venice
A vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal is a good rainy-day outing, with palaces to watch from the water. For a drier break, spend time around Cannaregio's Fondamenta della Misericordia, where you can duck into a bacaro between strolls.
Check the city's high-tide notices before walking through low areas such as Piazza San Marco. If acqua alta, or unusually high water, is expected, raised walkways may be set out. They help, but the square can still be wet and crowded.
