Visiting Venice in July
July heat and sightseeing
Venice feels hot and sticky in July, especially in narrow lanes where the air can barely move. Days reach 29°C, with warm nights around 22°C. You'll enjoy early walks around San Marco or quiet time inside the Doge's Palace more than long midday strolls.
Rain falls on about 11 days, but showers don't usually define the whole day. Take a vaporetto along the Grand Canal and save shaded churches or galleries for the hottest hours. A long walk across the open Riva degli Schiavoni can feel draining in the afternoon.
Redentore weekend
The Festa del Redentore is July's big local event. On the third weekend, a temporary bridge links the Zattere to Giudecca, and fireworks light up the lagoon. It's a lively, crowded night, with people gathering along the water and on boats.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Giudecca waterfront during the fireworks and explore Cannaregio instead. The event marks the end of a plague in the 1500s, and the Church of the Redentore is the focal point.
Crowds and local tips
July is peak summer season, so San Marco, Rialto and the vaporetto stops get packed. Hotels and flights usually cost more than in quieter months, such as January or November. June is also popular, but July brings stronger heat and school-holiday crowds.
Travelling with kids? Keep indoor stops near your route, such as the Natural History Museum in Santa Croce. For a cooler ride, take vaporetto line 1 along the Grand Canal rather than crossing the city on foot. The ride is slow, but you'll get a seat-side view of palaces and canals.
