April feels mild

Venice is comfortable for long walks in April, with mild days and cool evenings. Expect a mix of sun and cloud, plus some rain. The weather is much gentler than March, though May is warmer and wetter.

You can wander the sestieri, or neighbourhoods, and explore the Doge's Palace without summer heat. A rainy spell suits the Peggy Guggenheim Collection or a long lunch over cicchetti, Venice's small bar snacks. Save island trips to Murano and Burano for clearer days; wind and showers can make the boat ride less pleasant.

San Marco's rose day

April 25 is Saint Mark's Day, Venice's patron saint's feast, and also Italy's Liberation Day. You may see locals give a red rosebud, called a bocolo, to someone they love. Events and crowds are especially noticeable around St Mark's Square.

Crowds and costs

April is a popular spring month, especially around Easter and April 25. Expect busy lanes near Rialto and San Marco, and less room on crowded vaporetto boats. It's generally livelier and pricier than winter, but usually less intense than peak summer.

A handy local tip: on April 25, avoid crossing St Mark's Square at the busiest time. Take the quieter route through Castello instead, then follow the lagoon-side promenade towards the Giardini. It's a pleasant walk and keeps you out of the thickest crowds.
