March feels like a cautious start to spring: afternoons can be cool, while damp air and cloud often make the day feel less bright. Rain falls on several days, so you may need to shift between outdoor stops and indoor ones.

It's still a good month for Ljubljana Castle, the riverside cafés and a stroll across the Triple Bridge when the weather clears. Save longer walks on wooded paths around Rožnik for a dry spell; muddy ground can take the fun out of them. April is milder, so March isn't the easiest time for a full day outdoors.

Events and crowds

March doesn't have a major fixed public holiday in Slovenia. The Ljubljana Dragon Carnival is tied to Shrove Tuesday, so it can fall in February or March; don't count on it without checking the year's date.

The city is generally quieter than in summer and the busy months from June to September. You'll have an easier time wandering the Old Town, and accommodation often costs less than in peak season. If you hate crowds, March is a calmer choice, though the weather is less reliable than in the warmer months.

Make the most of a rainy day

When showers roll in, follow the covered colonnade at Plečnik's Central Market, between Vodnikov and Pogačar squares. You can browse the market stalls and reach the Triple Bridge without spending long in the rain.

For a warming local bite, look for štruklji, rolled dough with sweet or savoury fillings. March's cool evenings suit it better than a long, late riverside meal.
