June feels hot and soggy

Hanoi in June is hot, sticky and often cloudy. Days reach 32°C, and nights stay warm at 26°C. Rain falls on 22 days, often in heavy showers, so streets can get wet fast. The high humidity makes long walks around the Old Quarter tiring.

Try the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area or the Temple of Literature early, then spend the sticky afternoon in the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts or a café. A cyclo ride through the Old Quarter is more comfortable than a long walk, but avoid planning a full day outdoors. June has little sunshine, and showers can disrupt outdoor plans.

Events and summer crowds

June brings International Children's Day, though it isn't a national public holiday. Tet Doan Ngo, a traditional midyear festival, also often falls in June; its date follows the lunar calendar. Families eat seasonal fruit and bánh tro, a sticky rice cake wrapped in leaves.

Summer school holidays bring Vietnamese families to travel destinations, but Hanoi is less crowded than during its cool, popular months from December to February. June can feel quieter for sightseeing, and accommodation may cost less than in busier periods. July is rainier, while May is a little drier.

After a downpour, water can collect on streets around the Old Quarter. Take a taxi rather than walking between sights, and order bún chả nearby while the rain passes. It's grilled pork with rice noodles, and makes a satisfying break from the weather.
