Visiting Hanoi in September
September weather
September in Hanoi feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Afternoons can reach 31°C, while nights stay warm at around 24°C. Rain falls on many days, so expect sudden showers that can interrupt a walk through the Old Quarter or a visit to the Temple of Literature.
You can still enjoy a bowl of phở or watch a water puppet show indoors when the rain sets in. Save longer walks around Hoan Kiem Lake for a dry spell. Skip plans that depend on clear skies, such as a full day exploring outdoor sights.
Events and crowds
Vietnam's National Day falls on September 2. Hanoi may have public celebrations, and central streets can be busier around the holiday. The Mid-Autumn Festival also often falls in September, though its date changes each year. Hang Ma Street in the Old Quarter fills with lanterns and festive decorations.
If you hate crowds, avoid Hang Ma Street near the festival evening and enjoy the displays earlier in the day. September is generally quieter than the cooler peak months from December to February. You may find better hotel prices than in those popular months, though National Day can bring a local rush.
Make rainy days easier
Rain totals are lower than in August but still high; October is drier. Humidity stays high, and the weather can feel tiring if you're sightseeing for hours. Build in indoor stops rather than trying to cover the city in one go.
Travelling with kids? The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre near Hoan Kiem Lake is a handy rainy-day stop. Buy tickets there for a show, then walk to nearby cafés if showers ease. In the Old Quarter, look out for slick pavements and deep puddles after heavy rain.
