April's sticky weather

April feels warm and damp in Hanoi. Afternoons can reach 31°C, and humidity makes walks around Hoan Kiem Lake feel tiring. Rain falls on 12 days, while cloud and limited sunshine can make the sky feel grey.

It's still a good month for the Temple of Literature, museums and cafés in the Old Quarter. Save longer outdoor walks for cooler parts of the day, and don't count on a clear view from a rooftop. The heat and showers make strenuous sightseeing less comfortable than in winter.

Holidays and crowds

Hung Kings' Festival falls in April in some years. It's a national holiday, but its date follows the lunar calendar. Reunification Day on April 30 is fixed, and it starts a holiday period that can bring more Vietnamese travellers to Hanoi and nearby sights.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling around April 30. For most of the month, Hanoi is generally quieter than during the popular December-to-February season, and prices are often gentler too. Expect more demand and higher rates around the holiday.

Tips for Hanoi in April

April is warmer and wetter than March, but usually less rainy than May. That makes it a useful in-between month: you can explore the city, but keep indoor stops in mind when showers arrive. The weather isn't ideal for long, exposed walks.

Travelling with kids? Mix a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area with time indoors at the nearby Vietnam Military History Museum. For a simple local tip, order bún chả in the Old Quarter at lunchtime; the grilled pork and noodles make a satisfying break from sightseeing.
