May: hot and damp

May feels sticky in Hanoi, with humid afternoons and frequent showers. The high reaches 32°C and the low stays around 24°C. Rain falls on 19 days, so a downpour can interrupt a walk through the Old Quarter or around Hoan Kiem Lake. April is much drier, and June is wetter still.

You'll likely enjoy shorter outings, then a cool break in a café or the Vietnam National Museum of History. The Temple of Literature is worth seeing, but its open courtyards can feel tiring in the heat. Save long walks and outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day. Don't count on a dry stretch for a trip to West Lake.

May: public holidays

May brings International Labour Day and, on May 19, the birthday of Ho Chi Minh. Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area can draw visitors for ceremonies and tributes around his birthday. The Mausoleum is a meaningful stop, but expect more people nearby on the day.

The early-May public holiday period can also bring Vietnamese families into the city. If you're visiting then, the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake may feel busier than usual.

Crowds and local tips

Outside the holiday dates, May is generally calmer than Hanoi's popular December-to-February season. You may also find better-value stays than in those cooler months. It's a shoulder season, though the weather can make long sightseeing days less appealing.

If you hate crowds, steer clear of the Old Quarter around the early-May holiday. For a weather-proof break, book a seat at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre near Hoan Kiem Lake. Shows run indoors, so a sudden shower won't wash out your plans. Afterward, try a bowl of bun cha in the Old Quarter, where grilled pork and noodles make a satisfying meal.
