February is mild rather than sunny. Afternoons reach about 24°C, while mornings and evenings can feel cool at around 14°C. The air is humid, skies are often cloudy, and you'll get little sunshine. Rain is usually light, but damp streets can make long walks feel less pleasant.

It's still a good month for exploring on foot. Wander the Old Quarter, circle Hoan Kiem Lake, or visit the Temple of Literature without the sticky heat of later months. Don't plan around blue skies, and save a day trip to the countryside for a clearer forecast.

Tết and local life

Lunar New Year, or Tết, sometimes falls in February. Hanoi can feel unusually quiet as families travel and many shops and restaurants close. In the days around the holiday, transport gets busy, and popular spots such as Hoan Kiem Lake draw local visitors.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the main Tết rush. If you're in town then, buy snacks and water in the Old Quarter before the holiday, when everyday shops may shut.

Crowds and costs

February is part of Hanoi's best overall visiting season, so it's generally busier than the hotter, wetter months that follow. Tết can bring a sharp change: streets may be quiet, but transport and rooms can be harder to find around the holiday. Prices aren't uniformly high all month, so dates matter.

Travelling with kids? The cooler weather suits a relaxed stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake, but don't count on every favourite food stall being open during Tết. January is cooler and a little wetter; March turns warmer and wetter, so February offers a useful middle ground.
