Visiting Ha Long in February

February weather

February feels cool rather than cold, with mild afternoons and chilly evenings. The air is humid, and cloud often hangs over Ha Long Bay, softening the views. You'll get some rain, but showers don't usually rule out a day on the water.

A boat trip still works well, and cooler conditions suit walks around Bai Chay. But don't count on bright blue skies or long beach afternoons. Low cloud can make distant islands hard to see, so keep some flexibility if the bay's views are your main reason for coming.

Tet and February crowds

Tet, Vietnam's Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in February. If your visit overlaps, expect more Vietnamese families travelling and some shops or restaurants to close for part of the holiday. The dates change each year, so check the calendar for your travel year.

February is within Ha Long's cooler, popular visiting season, but it's generally less crowded than the summer holiday months. Tet can bring a short-lived jump in domestic visitors, and prices may rise around the holiday. For couples who prefer quieter boat trips, dates outside Tet are a better bet.

Making the trip work

February is a good time for cave visits and sightseeing when the weather turns grey. Sung Sot Cave, on Bo Hon Island, is a useful stop: its chambers are impressive even when the bay views are misty. Ask your cruise operator about visibility before setting out, especially if seeing the limestone islands matters most to you.

For a local taste, try cha muc, Ha Long's grilled squid cake, around Bai Chay. It's a warming, savoury choice after a cool day on the water. If Tet is underway, don't assume your favourite restaurant will be open; smaller family-run places may take a holiday break.
